The Nei Jing says “The ordinary practitioner treats the body, the good practitioner treats the person”

Western Medicine defines its diseases clearly, and recognizes the idea of “homeostasis”, but doesn’t have a very good definition of what “health” is.  As a result, modern TCM schools, especially in the West, spend most of their time defining disease and its recognized patterns.  Traditional Chinese Medicine, though, has a number of good definitions of what health is.  How does understanding the Six Meridians help us treat the whole person? In this class we will look at three ways to interpret the six meridians

1)    the anatomical/physical  aspect and yin/ yang in the body,

2)    the political/military metaphors - why the Shanghanlun is organized the way it is,

3)    the growth cycles - how the five elements are reflected in the 6 meridians.

Politics was an essential element of Chinese thought 2000 years ago. The Nei Jing was written in the Han dynasty after 400 years of vicious civil war. As a result the important question of the time was  “What does it take to keep a state working?”  The political and military metaphors (the 12 Officials) are used to show what a state needs to fix itself and are used to show what a body needs to fix and maintain itself.

In this class, we will begin to understand the political and military metaphors used in Chinese medicine within their historical context.  We will learn how the 12 officials contribute to our understanding of the 12 meridians and how to recognize dysfunction of the body in terms of the meridians and their officials.
